Inspired by a visit to the Muyira community group, we were very interested in the project that SOPAD, through its COPAD branch, is currently implementing in Bujumbura Rural Province. This initiative gave us a better understanding of the tangible impact of their approach and the opportunities it offers to young people and women in our community.
The Coga solidarity group was formed following an inspiring visit to the fields of the Muyira group. Impressed by the organization and the results achieved by their counterparts, the members of Coga initially expressed a desire to join this already well-established group. However, since that was not a viable option, the leader of the Muyira group encouraged them to create their own group. Buoyed by this momentum, they quickly organized their initiative, while the Muyira cooperative informed the SOPAD training team about the emergence of this promising new group. This support paved the way for tailored guidance aimed at ensuring their development and self-sufficiency.
In Bujumbura Rural Province, a new agricultural movement began to take shape under SOPAD’s leadership. Inspired by the successful experience of the Muyira cooperative, the Coga cooperative was formed, driven by its members’ determination to transform agriculture into a true engine of economic and social development for their community.
A Rapid and Structured Response
When the SOPAD team contacted the leader of the Coga group, he had already made preparations to mobilize a team of 20 people ready to get started as soon as the rainy season began in September 2024. Aware of the challenges and opportunities presented by this project, they quickly structured their organization and identified a plot of land to lease to serve as a demonstration field. After finalizing the lease, SOPAD immediately launched the first agricultural activities, providing the inputs and equipment needed to ensure the crops got off to a good start.
From the very beginning, a productive work environment took shape, characterized by the enthusiasm of the consortium members. Through regular training sessions led by SOPAD experts, they are gradually acquiring essential skills in modern agricultural techniques, crop management, and harvest processing. This increase in skills not only allows them to improve their productivity but also ensures the long-term viability of their farms.
A Model of Success and Inspiration
This group stands out for its dynamism and determination. Its motivated and dedicated members show real potential for the project’s success. Their willingness to fully commit to this initiative reflects their ambition to make agriculture a true driver of economic and social development for their community.
Through this collective effort, they aim to strengthen local food security, generate stable income, and pave the way for new opportunities for future generations. By adopting modern farming techniques and applying the best practices they have learned through SOPAD’s guidance, these aspiring farmers hope not only to improve their yields but also to ensure the sustainability of their crops in the face of climate and economic challenges.

Not only does the organization ensure that group members receive high-quality training, but it also provides them with the tools necessary for long-term success, including access to high-quality agricultural inputs and advice on farm management. Furthermore, by enabling members to access new marketing channels and helping them develop sales networks, SOPAD contributes to improving producers’ incomes while fostering a circular and resilient economy.
Over time, this collaboration promises not only to improve the living conditions of the cooperative’s members, but also to actively contribute to the economic and social development of the entire surrounding community. As the cooperative grows and new projects are launched, the economic benefits will reach a greater number of people, thereby stimulating the local economy.
